Understanding NZ Care Levels & Vacancy

Navigating residential aged care in New Zealand begins with understanding certified clinical care levels and how bed availability is managed.

đŸĨ

The 4 Certified Levels of Care

To enter subsidized residential care in New Zealand, an individual must first be assessed by a Needs Assessment and Service Coordination (NASC) team. The assessment assigns an authorized level of care:

đŸ›ī¸ 1. Rest Home Care

Suited for older adults who require daily assistance with personal hygiene, medication, meals, and mobility, but do not require complex medical nursing care around the clock.

🧠 2. Secure Dementia Care

Specialized secure units for individuals with dementia or cognitive impairment who are prone to wandering or require a structured, calm environment. Staff have dedicated dementia training and exits are securely monitored for resident safety.

đŸĨ 3. Private Hospital-Level Care

For residents with significant medical dependencies, chronic illness, mobility limitations, or palliative requirements that require constant 24-hour monitoring and care from Registered Nurses.

âš•ī¸ 4. Specialist Psychogeriatric Care

Intensive, high-security care for individuals exhibiting severe behavioral or psychological symptoms associated with dementia or complex mental health diagnoses that cannot be safely managed in a standard dementia unit.

How Vacancy Status Works

Facility-Wide ReportingVacancy indicators across NZ care directories reflect whether the facility has open capacity as a whole, rather than breaking vacancies down by individual ward or care level.
đŸŸĸ
Beds Available: The facility currently reports immediate capacity. Check with admissions to confirm if the open bed matches your required care wing.
🟡
Waitlist / Soon: An impending discharge or bed turnover is expected shortly, or a managed short waitlist is actively accepting enquiries.
🔴
No Vacancies: The facility is currently full with no impending beds.
